Essays / Sermons

Nuechterlein, Paul. All Saints Day sermons. Near the end of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Harry turns the Resurrection Stone in his hand and the result is a beautiful All Saints Day Scene. All Saints Day also features readings from the Book of Revelation (Year A and Year B), as well as the other biblical book in the apocalyptic genre, Daniel (Year C). I propose that a parallel to the Book of Revelation in theme and genre for our time is J.K. Rowling‘s Harry Potter saga.

Nuechterlein, Paul. “Harry Potter and Power in Weakness.” A sermon preached July 6, 2003.

Nuechterlein, Paul. “Harry Potter and the Power of Love.” An Internet essay published December 2005, latest version in January 2007 (between Books 6 and 7 — with some surprisingly accurate guesses about Book 7).

Nuechterlein, Paul. “Jesus Christ and the Life-Giving Hallows.” A sermon preached July 29, 2007.

Wandinger, Nikolaus. “‘Sacrifice’ in ‘Harry Potter’ from a Girardian Perspective.” An essay presented to the Girardian meeting of the AAR/SBL convention in November, 2009, and subsequently published in Contagion 17 (2010).
